Mecca is the holiest city in Islam, the birthplace of the Prophet Muhammad, and the site of the Kaaba, located within the Masjid al-Haram (The Great Mosque). It is the spiritual focal point for billions of Muslims worldwide, who face the city during daily prayers. Entry to the city is strictly forbidden to non-Muslims. The city’s economy and daily life revolve entirely around religious tourism, specifically the Hajj (annual pilgrimage) and Umrah. The skyline is dominated by the Abraj Al Bait (Clock Tower), one of the tallest and most massive buildings in the world, which towers over the Great Mosque.
