Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta and the northernmost major metropolis in North America. Often referred to as the “Gateway to the North,” it serves as the primary logistical, manufacturing, and economic staging ground for the massive energy projects (oil sands) and diamond mines located in the northern territories. The city is geographically defined by the North Saskatchewan River, which winds through the center of town. The river’s banks form the River Valley, the largest stretch of urban parkland in North America—a continuous ribbon of green space 22 times larger than New York’s Central Park that creates a haven for cyclists, runners, and cross-country skiers.
