Located on the Loire River near the Atlantic coast, Nantes is a city that has successfully reinvented itself from an industrial port into a hub of art, green living, and innovation. Historically the capital of Brittany, it retains the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, a massive castle in the city center. Today, Nantes is famous for its whimsical and surreal creativity, best exemplified by “Les Machines de l’île,” an artistic project on the former shipyards featuring a giant, walkable mechanical elephant and other steampunk creations inspired by the writings of Jules Verne (who was born here). The city is consistently ranked as one of the best places to live in Europe due to its extensive parks, “green line” tourist trail drawn on the pavement, and proximity to the Muscadet vineyards.
