Located in the southernmost tip of the Netherlands, sandwiched between Belgium and Germany, Maastricht feels distinct from the rest of the country. It is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, featuring Roman ruins, Spanish-influenced architecture, and cobblestone streets that give it a “Burgundian” lifestyle—meaning a focus on fine dining and a slower pace of life. It is internationally famous as the birthplace of the European Union (via the Maastricht Treaty) and the hometown of violinist André Rieu. The city is bisected by the Meuse River and is known for its high-end boutiques, medieval churches, and the massive caves of St. Pietersberg located just outside the city center.
