Hail is an agricultural city in northwestern Saudi Arabia, historically significant as a major resting point on the camel caravan routes of the Hajj pilgrimage. The city is surrounded by the rugged Shammar mountain range (Aja and Salma). Hail is deeply associated with the legend of Hatim al-Tai, an Arab poet famous for his extreme generosity, making the city a symbol of hospitality. It is also the gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage rock art sites at Jubbah, which depict human life in the region from thousands of years ago. The city is dominated by the historic A’arif Fort, perched on a hilltop overlooking the town.
