Jeddah is the cosmopolitan “Bride of the Red Sea.” As the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia and the historic gateway for pilgrims traveling to Mecca, it has always been a melting pot of cultures. The city is famous for the Al-Balad district (historic center), a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with crumbling but beautiful coral-stone houses featuring intricate wooden latticework windows (roshan). Jeddah has a more liberal and open atmosphere than Riyadh, featuring a massive Corniche (waterfront) lined with sculptures, the King Fahd Fountain (the tallest in the world), and the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, which hosts Formula 1 races.
