Located at the “Three Countries Corner” where Switzerland, France, and Germany meet, Basel is a pocket-sized metropolis with a massive cultural footprint. It is the wealthy hub of the global pharmaceutical industry (home to Novartis and Roche) but is best known as the art capital of Switzerland, hosting Art Basel, the world’s premier contemporary art fair. The city rests on the Rhine River, and in the summer, locals pack their clothes in waterproof “Wickelfisch” bags and float down the current. Basel has the highest density of museums in the country and a beautiful, red-sandstone medieval Old Town.
